Two Parts Air

Collaborations with choreographers and dancers create opportunities to investigate the relationships among movement, occupation and spatial structure. The images above document sets designed for two separate but related dances choreographed by Peter Schmitz, Artistic Director for the Dance Company of Middlebury College. The set elements, designed in response to the spatial and movement vocabularies of the choreography, are moved by the dancers during the concert, creating a mutable series of spatial structures. For 'Two Parts Air' (left photo), these structures are loosely architectonic, creating voids which contain the dance, while the set elements in 'Felt Presence of an Absence' (right photo) are meant to evoke a faint record of occupation and movement, like the thin line of a vapor trail left in the sky by a passing jet.
