Ann Kearsley Design (est. 1983) is a landscape architecture and urban design firm based in Portland, ME. Projects range from private residential gardens to institutional and public landscapes and include successful collaborations with architects, artists, choreographers and curators. Working with art collectors, sculptors and curators, the firm has developed a particular expertise in creating landscapes for art, and in siting and installing outdoor sculpture.
Owner Ann Kearsley is a registered landscape architect (AZ License. # 36907, ME License #3075) and holds masters degrees in both landscape architecture and urban design from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, as well as an A.B. from Dartmouth College in English and comparative literatures. She received a practical education in horticulture while working in the horticulture departments of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island.
"My approach to landscape design is deeply imbedded in ideas about experience and perception. I pay close attention to site; to inherent forms and to specific expressions of place. I also consider how individuals and groups move through space, and how that movement both connects and distinguishes a site to and from its context. I have a particular interest in the nature of occupation; in the relationships among landscape form, movement and the perception of space. The landscapes I design are singular expressions of site and occupants; a kind of spatial portraiture, each project very different from the others." Ann Kearsley
